Love over Gold thrives on contrast, tension, and composition. Dire Straits’ fourth album captures a band in transition, with bolder arrangements, darker moods, and more space for atmosphere. Partly edgy and sharp, partly seductive and relaxed, the five extended tracks unfold like a winding country road through a pastoral landscape. The addition of new rhythm guitarist Hal Lindes encourages a denser, more atmospheric interplay. The band takes its time to reach its destinations, painting evocative soundscapes filled with patience, drama, and often melancholy. Frontman Mark Knopfler remains in top form throughout, his smoky vocal delivery conveying romantic longing, frustration, and what Rolling Stone aptly described as a “racking schizophrenia between the heart and the heartless, the loving and the pain.”

Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s 180 g 45 RPM 2LP set and hybrid SACD of Love over Gold deliver superb balance, clear depth, and crystalline purity. Audio enthusiasts will notice the distinctive tonal qualities of Knopfler’s Mesa Boogie Mark II guitar amplifier (later used again on Brothers in Arms), along with his carefully chosen instruments: Schecter Stratocasters, a 1937 National steel guitar, and Ovation six- and twelve-string models. Reference-level separation places the band vividly in the room, while tube-like warmth and airiness allow the music to breathe anew. With these reissues, everything seemingly turns to gold.

Use only according to the manufacturer's instructions. No aggressive cleaning agents, no damp environments. Store small parts safely due to choking hazard. Mount accessories correctly to avoid damage or malfunction.
