About Ortofon

Ortofon was founded on 9 October 1918 by Danish engineers Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen in Copenhagen — as the 'Electrical Phono Film Company', to develop sound film. In 1923 they presented one of the world's first synchronised sound films at Copenhagen's Palace Theatre.

After the Second World War the company turned to the vinyl record and adopted the name Ortofon in 1947 — Greek for 'correct sound'. Today Ortofon is the largest cartridge manufacturer in the world, producing around half a million systems per year, still in Denmark.
