Turntables

Buying a turntable — what matters

A turntable — also called a record player — brings vinyl to life. Three things matter most: the drive (belt or direct drive), whether a phono stage is built in, and the right cartridge.

Fully automatic decks cue and lift at the press of a button — ideal for beginners and anyone who values convenience. Manual decks avoid mechanics in the signal path and are considered sonically purer; high-end decks push smoothness, speed stability and resonance control to the limit. One rule of thumb: the cartridge's price class should match the deck.
