Vinyl Care: How to Keep Your Records in Top Shape

Why Vinyl Care Is So Important

A dirty record doesn't just sound worse — it also damages the cartridge. Dust and dirt in the groove increase tracking distortion and wear out the stylus faster. With the right care, your records will sound like new and last a lifetime.

The Right Cleaning — Four Methods Compared

  • Dry cleaning with carbon fiber brush: Ideal for daily care before playback. Removes loose surface dust but doesn't clean deep into the groove.
  • Wet cleaning with cleaning fluid: Affordable entry point. Done manually with brush and microfiber cloth. Good results for normal dirt.
  • Record Cleaning Machine: Professional cleaning with vacuum suction. Recommended for valuable or heavily soiled records.
  • Ultrasonic cleaning: The best method for deep-seated dirt. The HumminGuru and similar devices are now available for under €500.

Proper Record Storage

Records belong stored vertically — never stacked horizontally, that leads to warping. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources. Optimal is 18–22 degrees Celsius and 45–55 percent humidity. Replace paper inner sleeves with anti-static polyethylene sleeves.

Setting Tracking Force and Anti-Skating Correctly

The correct tracking force is crucial for sound quality and stylus preservation. Too little force leads to distortion and skipping, too much force increases wear. You'll find the recommended value in the cartridge documentation. As a rule of thumb: 1.5 to 2.5 grams for most MM cartridges.

Don't Forget Stylus Care

The stylus should be cleaned regularly with a soft brush or special stylus cleaner. After about 500 to 1,000 hours of play, a stylus change is recommended — depending on usage intensity and record quality.
